About Us

 

The Legal Services Division of the Department of Justice is the government’s law office, responsible for the provision of all legal services (excluding prosecutions) to the Province of Nova Scotia. The lawyers in the Legal Services Division provide legal advice and services on a broad range of matters to the Government and many of its agencies, boards and commissions. The Legal Services Division consists of Solicitor Services, Litigation Services and the Registry of Regulations.


 

About Our Opportunity

 

The solicitor is responsible for providing effective and efficient legal counsel to the Government of Nova Scotia and its agencies, and to ensure that public affairs are administered in accordance with the law. Responsibilities include: providing legal advice and opinions on matters of law and legal policy to senior government officials; conducting research; preparation and review of legal documents; and drafting and interpretation of legislation and regulations. Excellent research, analytical and organizational skills are required, along with the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, orally and in writing, and the ability to function with a minimum of supervision in a team environment. Proven ability to respond to client needs for quality legal services and the demonstrated ability to be effective in demanding circumstances is also required, as is the ability to anticipate problems and work effectively with the client towards a resolution. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to offer creative and innovative solutions to complex challenges, as well as the flexibility to adapt and thrive in a continuously changing and demanding environment.

 

About You

 

The successful candidate must:

  • be a practicing member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society (or eligible for membership)
  • have experience or knowledge in the following areas: administrative law, contract law, constitutional law

 

The following would be considered assets:

    • experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas: family law, human rights, international law, enforcement of civil judgments, legislative drafting and interpretation
    • experience advising government departments or agencies

 

Other Considerations

 

This is a two-year term entry level employment opportunity for those with less than 3 years related experience.

 

Pay Grade: MCL 15 - MCL 20

Salary Range: $2,487.73 - $3,710.64 Bi-Weekly
