Full time Lawyer (In House Counsel) Patent Agent

Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel and Head of IP, this Patent Agent / Lawyer will be responsible for providing legal advice to Aurora Cannabis Inc. and subsidiaries in matters pertaining to patents and intellectual property.




  • Provide legal counsel and deliver exceptional value to senior counsel and executive management in all matters pertaining to patents to advance the interests of Aurora and subsidiaries
  • Perform risk assessments relating to business activities, new product plans and strategies by providing support to legal counsel on patent scope, infringement and validity
  • Participate in M&A due-dilligence activities as it relates to patents
  • Monitor the competitive intellectual property space to identify potential infringing products, provide patent litigation support as needed
  • Provide ad-hoc support and maintain open communication within the legal department, leveraging extensive knowledge of relevant IP law and technical areas of expertise




  • Superior analytical skills and the ability to offer unique perspectives on complex issues pertaining to intellectual property
  • Strong drafting skills and excellent oral and written communication, strong legal research skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines
  • Proactively communicate with team members and other stakeholders and develop and maintain a trusted relationship throughout the process
  • Excellent time management and multi-tasking abilities, as well as a high level of energy and ability to provide an exceptional level of customer service to internal and external stakeholders
  • Outstanding problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively while maintaining good judgment
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset
  • Life Sciences or chemical patent experience is required
  • Electrical arts patent experience considered an asset
  • Trademark experience is considered an asset




  • Registered Canadian Patent Agent required
  • Registered US Patent Agent is a strong asset 
  • 4-6 years of patent experience
  • Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, Alberta or B.C. is considered an asset
  • Experience in cannabis, pharmaceutical, tobacco or alcohol industry is considered a strong asset
