Thompson Rivers University (TRU) seeks an experienced, strong, innovative leader to guide and support the Faculty of Law in its research, teaching and service activities. Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean will have responsibilities in the administration, leadership and the development of the Faculty. The Associate Dean will represent the Faculty regionally, provincially, nationally, and internationally. The position is for a 4-year term, with potential for renewal for one additional 4-year term.
The Faculty of Law opened its doors in September of 2011 to its founding class of law students to begin their legal careers. In 2017 we celebrated our 4th graduation in June and welcomed our 7th JD class in September.
Our JD is taught to 330 students by an outstanding group of legal academics who are committed to providing the highest possible quality of teaching to our students. Our faculty members are renowned, having studied and practiced law around the world, bringing with them a remarkable breadth and depth of academic and legal practice experience. Our colleagues are, without exception, excellent and prolific scholars. They are pioneers in building the best legal education program possible within the resources available. Our full-time professors are joined by exceptionally talented lawyers serving as sessional lecturers, thereby augmenting our range of course offerings and enhancing the skills that our law students acquire, as well as through our Judge in Residence, Hon Richard Blair, BC Supreme Court (Retd.).
We clearly benefit from state-of-the-art facilities in an award-winning new law school building that includes bright, modern classrooms and student study spaces. Our building also houses a new law library that reflects its 21st century creation via reliance primarily on an e-collection (over 500,000 volumes) with a modest hard copy collection.
The Faculty is engaging in a comprehensive curriculum review as well as actively considering the development of new graduate programs in law. The Legal Clinic, launched in early 2016 on a part-time basis, is transitioning to a full-time multi-site Clinic as it expands its operations in light of ongoing funding. The Faculty is committed to achieving the goals of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and for TRU to become the university of choice for Indigenous peoples. In our programs, research, and engagement with students and communities we seek to be fully responsive to Indigenous peoples and to take action in support of meaningful reconciliation.
The Associate Dean will play a key role in the support of increasing student success, intercultural understanding, research capacity, entrepreneurial activity and sustainability. The Associate Dean is responsible for management and supervisory functions as assigned by the Dean including the academic coordination of existing Law programs, curriculum renewal, program reviews and the development of new programs on campus and through the Open Learning Division. The Associate Dean participates in all governance meetings of the Faculty such as the Faculty Council, and in relevant meetings. The Associate Dean liaises with the other university offices in the coordination of degree programs. The Associate Dean also ensures that students and applicants for all programs receive appropriate academic counselling and advising. The Associate Dean assumes the role of Acting Dean in the Dean’s absence.
TRU is a uniquely comprehensive, student-focused institution built on over 40 years of excellence in postsecondary education and training. Our main campus is located in beautiful Kamloops (pop. 90,000), located just a 4-hour drive from Vancouver in the heart of the southern BC interior. Kamloops offers world-class tourism and recreation, over 2,000 hours of sunshine annually, and excellent cultural, social and economic opportunities. The university also operates regional campuses in Williams Lake, Lillooet, 100 Mile House, Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Barriere, and Clearwater.
